What God was on her side?
by Elaine Newington Ward

Acrylic on canvas 100cm x 75cms Whose God has been with women over the centuries? At different times they have been blamed for all the sin of the world, stoned to death for failing to live up to a code of behaviour devised for the benefit of men, been beaten as wives and daughters, treated as chattels and domestic slaves, written off as the collateral damage of male conflicts, traded as sex workers or marriageable items, raped, and inseminated to eliminate infidels, heathens, gentiles et al.. The picture hints at men of every persuasion, creed and colour but the one women, is grey and colourless.
