LizAtkin Professional
Liz Atkin is a visual artist based in London. With a background in theatre and dance, physicality underpins her creative practice. Skin is her primary source for corporeal art, both as metaphorical membrane and physical boundary. Her work centres on a multilayered exploration of the possibilities of marking, extending and transforming the skin so as to question the limits of the body and the potentials for communication across and within the porous textures of light and surfaces. This personal investigation explores body focused repetitive behaviour resulting in a sometimes violent rendering of the body in order to condense it to matter for resculpting.
Liz has exhibited in London, Los Angeles and Japan. London exhibitions include APT Gallery, Camden People\'s Theatre, Siobhan Davies Studios, Blackheath Halls, and in curated group shows for Parallax AF Pall Mall, Showcase Cities, and Rich Mix. She completed a Masters in European Dance Theatre Practice with Distinction from Trinity Laban in 2007. She won the London Paper self-portrait award with the Affordable Art Fair in February 2008 and won the British Women Artists 2010 competition.
Liz was the only international Artist in Residence on The Genesis Project, Los Angeles California (2008), and recently was Fellowship Resident Artist at the Akiyoshidai International Art Village in Japan (August 2011). She has made collaborative work with photographers Cameron McNee and Lenka Rayn H, molecular biologist Dr Simon Park at University of Surrey, performance maker Luke Pell, and film maker Oliver Warren.
Liz is a resident artist in Havelock Walk in South London, a creative community of sculptors, painters, designers, photographers and other visual artists. She exhibits work in regular Havelock Open Studios throughout the year.
Recently she was a selected British artist for 1 Day of Art: London for (t)here Magazine, New York; a book of her collaboration with Lenka Rayn H has been published and her artwork is the subject of a documentary short by Dingo Bill Productions for Manifesto, a NYC/LDN company.
Liz will be exhibiting work at Bethlem Gallery in a solo show for February 2013. The gallery was founded in 1997 at Bethlem Royal Hospital (originally Bedlam), one of the world\'s oldest hospitals for the care and treatment of people with mental health difficulties.
