Henriette
In 2011, Henriette decided to go back and see Liberia and her house again (which during the civil war, had been bombed and then rebuilt.) Her memories have haunted her during lockdown, and her work has taken on a transformation. She said, 'It was an emotional time and also shocking to see how much of the city and the infrastructure had been so destroyed in the civil war and so many places where we used to go to discos, were now just ruins. Still I’m glad I went and hope to go back again sometime in the future. It was still beautiful and awful, at the same time.
During the coronavirus lockdown, I started to paint from some of the many photos I took during the visit, and a transformation in my work started to take place.' Picture The Dance mixed media on paper.
