The Sharks of Wigtown Bay
The undulating sands and sharks,
With whips for eyes and diamond backs:
They call the men to cruel deeds,
And drown them as they fish for souls.
The mud is deep at Martyr's Pole,
And thicker still with baying hounds -
The tope runs line from shore to shore,
Casts empty glances round the dead,
And nuzzles in to cooling flesh.
The little dogfish snap and snip,
And kick up sand and stir up mud,
And howl the passing baskers in.
For peace and love have rarely met,
Where sharks are feeding at the cross.
